New Puppy Essentials Today on Daily Dog!

Hey it's Izzie and Charlie here and we just thought we would post some information from on the blog today about how to prepare and care for your new puppy. Since our babies will all be going to forever homes sometime soon we figured this was a good thing to let people know! So here are some of the essentials that us 5 springers came up with along with the mommins'! There are still 3 precious girls waiting for the perfect forever home so if you are interested let us know :)

Collar and Leash
I prefer collar with a buckle instead of snap closure since they are more secure. They are generally inexpensive and good quality.

The example below is from Petsmart. Prices start at $2.75. They have leashes to match.

Dishes for Food and Water
Every puppy supply list should include quality dishes for food and water.
I like stainless steel bowls since they are easy to clean and can’t be chewed. Ensure they have a rubber non-stick part on the bottom so they stay in place while the puppy is eating/drinking.

The examples below are from Petsmart and start at $3.74

Indestructible Chew Toy
Puppies like to mouth and chew on things, so it’s essential to have a few chew-approved items around.

My dogs have a few favorites. Firstly a Kong is great for general chewing but I like to put peanut butter in it then freeze it and give it as a treat, because it’s frozen it works great for teething and I found it to work wonders for crate training. To train the puppy to want to go into their crate (or as I prefer to call it their “kennel”) I would say “kennel up” as I walk towards the kennel with the Kong from the freezer. The puppy then associates the yummy peanut butter Kong with their crate. Then since it takes a few minutes for the puppy to eat peanut butter out of the Kong it gives you time to leave the house without your puppy noticing and that helps with potential separation anxiety problem.

The Kong products below can be found at most pet stores and start at $5.99

In addition to Kong my dogs LOVE Nylabone’s I like to start off with the “Puppy Pack” which has a selection of 3 different puppy bones

Once the adult teeth start coming in the Nylabone double action chew and the Galileo chew above are definite favorites with my 5 springers. They last even with powerful chewers!

My pups also LOVE Kong squeaky balls and the Kong Airdog range in general is always a favorite!

If you use a “Chuck it” you can give your pet a great work out without doing yourself an injury trying to throw the ball!

Dog Crate
Crate training is the easiest way to good house training habits. A crate (or Kennel as I prefer to call it) can also serve as a safe, comfortable place to keep your puppy while you’re away from home or when you travel with him. Pictured below is one of the crates I have and of the 3 I have it is the best quality. I have the Extra Large size which measures 48L x 28W x 31H. Technically I think it says to use the large size for English Springer Spaniels but I feel that the large is a bit too small. You will definitely want to use the partition that comes with the crate to train your puppy since if they are allowed to use the entire area they may go to the bathroom in the crate. If you partition it off the pup will not want to go to the bathroom in the crate since dogs instinctively will go to the bathroom where they sleep. Just ensure they have adequate room to turn around and stretch out comfortably. It is tempting to want to give them the whole area but in the long term it is much better for training purposes to partition the puppy into a smaller area of the crate until he trained not to go to the bathroom in it.

This crate is the Midwest Life Stages Training and Travel Crates - 1600 Series and is $89.99 from Petsmart, I’m sure it can be found elsewhere.

Walking training aids
I LOVE LOVE the Halti Headcollar! It helps put you back in control of your pet. Calms boisterous animals and simplifies training. Works on the principle that where a dogs head goes his body will follow. By gently guiding a dog's head in the direction you want him to go the dog's body will follow. If you have a dog that pulls on the lead, you will know how exhausting walks can be. Dogs of all sizes can pull on the lead to the point of choking themselves.
Naturally following the contours of a dogs face and positioned well down the dog's nose, the Halti gives you maximum steering power and control. The particular advantage of the Halti is its unique on-off muzzle-closing effect: when the dog attempts to lunge forward or attack, his jaws are closed by the slip ring. When he is relaxed or friendly, he can pant easily and act just like a dog. The soft material and careful design and construction ensures the Halti is comfortable and in many dogs can create a pronounced calming effect.

It is so much more effective and doesn’t cause the discomfort to the animal that a choke chain does. I have known some breeds of dog not to respond as well to the Halti but all of my Springers are like different dogs when walking with the Halti. It will take a bit of getting used to and they will object to it at first by shaking their heads but once they realize it is not coming off they start responding positively to it. I highly recommend a Halti! I usually use a medium size on my dogs but make sure you try it on before using to ensure correct fit.

Grooming Tools
These are puppy products that are often overlooked, but they’re a necessity for Springer spaniels. You should buy a brush and nail clippers, regular grooming sessions not only keep your dog’s coat healthy, and they help build his trust in you as pack leader.

Also since Springers have a longer coat they will likely need to be trimmed a few times a year to ensure there are not matted areas, this can be done by a professional groomer or by yourself with dog clippers. Long hair around their paw pads also needs to be trimmed up regularly so mud and burrs don’t get stuck. I prefer Andis Pro Dog Clipper Kit, the great thing about it is the detachable blade, which means you can just replace the blade when it gets dull instead of buying a new set. It costs around $80.00 but will last you and is worth it over the cheaper clippers. I have also found that cordless is not as good since the battery usually runs out too soon and it generally costs more for cordless too.

Dogs also need their nails clipped regularly, this can be done at the groomer or by your vet or you can do it yourself. If you choose to do it yourself make sure you have the correct tool and that you carefully trim the nails ensuring you don’t cut too short. I have a pair like the orange pair below. I also recommend brushes like those below, I especially like the dual bristle one with softer on one side and harder on the other.

Springers also need their ears cleaned regularly, usually every 2 weeks and every time they are in water. Your vet should sell a good ear cleaner that you can use or they can be found at pet stores and online at places like 1800petmeds.com. Which brings me to a good point in that you will find that you can get most items cheaper online.

Name Tag
No puppy or dog should be without an id tag, an implanted microchip is also something is would definitely urge you to do. The microchip can be implanted without anesthetic with a large needle and although it is a little uncomfortable for the dog it is over quickly however I recommend having it implanted when the pup in to be spayed/neutered that way they won’t have any pain from the injection. Your vet can implant the microchip and prices vary however it is usually not too expensive since veterinarians know it is something that is in the best interest for you pet. The thought of ever losing my dogs upsets me so much that I cannot recommend microchipping enough to make sure your puppy can be traced back to you if he’s ever lost.

I like a fun name tag like the one below, however I do recommend you also have your phone number and possibly address on it.

For microchips I use Home Again however there are other microchips available and your vet can let you know what they use.

Flea, Tick and Heartworm Prevention
It is absolutely essential to use flea, tick and heartworm prevention medications every month. No matter how careful you are you never know what your pup is going to pick up and it’s better to be safe than sorry. I recommend Advantix or Frontline for flea and tick prevention. I have used both in the past but if you have a cat it is best to use Frontline because Advantix can be toxic to cats although it is completely safe for dogs.

For heartworm I recommend Heartguard or Interceptor. There are others available too that I am not familiar with and your vet will be able to advise you what they recommend.

Additional Items
You may want to have other items on hand to make caring for your pet easier.

Pooper scooper: I like the one below after trying almost all of the others available. You can find them at pet stores.

A folding gate: (baby gate) to confine your puppy to a particular room – make sure it is tall enough since Springers can jump pretty high! You can find then at store like Wal-Mart, Target etc.

Chemical deodorizers/cleaners: Great for accidents – I love Resolve pet stain, it smells good and cleans great!

It’s not necessary to spend a lot of money on a puppy product to keep your pet happy. Once you have the essentials, wait a few weeks and see what else he needs. You don’t want to buy something that never gets used. Also, your puppy can quickly outgrow many items quickly so when possible purchase with his adult size in mind.

We hope this helped you get started on the road to a happy puppy, check back soon for more on puppy diet and how to start you puppy on the raw diet!

Now it's me Charlie signing off I gotta go play with my little girl Belle, check out how cute we are together!

Puppies On Puppyfind.com !

Hey it's Lexie here just to pass on the message that the mommins' put an advertisement up for Izzie and Charlie's puppies on puppyfind.com, select" English Springer Spaniels", then "view all puppies" then "location search", then select "California" and then look for the one titled... "They're Here" and check out Izzie, Charlie and the puppies. If you're interested in a puppy please contact us! But we warned we won't let these precious babies go to just anyone, it has to be the a forever home where they will be loved and loved and loved... did I mention lots of love? Oh and a big yard to play in and lots of balls and frisbee's and...

OKAY Squeak! Phew I thought she would never stop! Hey it's Brodie here. I just wanted to say hi. Make sure you check out Izzie and the puppies on the puppy cam! They are so cute! http://www.ustream.tv/channel/today-on-daily-dog

Now it's cuddle time (just like the photo below from a while ago when Charlie was just a puppy) Notice the very handsome liver boy (that would be me) with some nice glasses on :0) hehe

Big Babies Today On Daily Dog!

It's puppy love in the house right now! Hi it's Montie here, Izzie and charlie's babies are three days old and thriving! At their weigh in yesterday they had all had gained weight, at the inital weigh in when they were born they ranged from 14-16 ounces but yesterday they were all between 18-18.5 ounces! Wow those are some big healthy puppies. I hope Izzie can keep up those hungry babies! The mommins are very good though and are always making sure she is happy and she is doing great!

I heard mommins Samantha saying she thinks the puppies and so healthy because of the raw diet Izzie was eating all throughout her pregnancy, in fact Izzie has eaten the raw diet since the mommins' got her. All five of us Blackberry Springers are on the raw diet and we LOVE it! We eat the Honest Kitchen dehydrated food that the mommins' make yummy, all they have to do is add water to it. Along with that we have chicken thighs and/or legs and for an occasional treat added in we get chicken liver or beef heart and also raw eggs cracked into it with the shell mashed up! Sounds good to me!! In fact Grandpa Rick said the last time he saw us that we looked like body builder English Springer spaniels, I guess that's a good thing. I have to admit I don't mind looking at my muscles in the mirror, hehe! My favorite of the Honest Kitchen varieties is called "Keen" YUMMY! So we all eat "Keen" expect for Izzie since she has puppies she is on "Embark" which is higher is all the good stuff mommy's need for milk production and energy to take care of the babies!
If you're interested in feeding your dog the best, tasty food "made with 100% human-grade ingredients that you’d recognize from your own kitchen. Made out of love and uncompromising attention to detail. No fillers, by-products, artificial preservatives, colors or flavors ever" Check out The Honest Kitchen at http://www.thehonestkitchen.com/

Here is a picture of the healthy bundles of joy, this was taken after the last pup, Bonnie, was born. The mommins put a heating pad in a box and covered the babes up to keep them cosy while Izzie went for her bathroom break, aren't they just precious?

See The Puppies Live!

Hey it's Brodie here, just to let you know you can see live streaming of the puppies at

http://www.ustream.tv/channel/today-on-daily-dog

The Mommins' are going to try to keep the web cam on as much as possible so everyone can see the babies whenever they want!

The Puppies At One Day Old!

Hey It's Me Izzie Bizzie!

I'm feeling much better now that I have had a day with my babies and settling into the whelping box with them. I'm still tired of course but I'm told that's because I have six big hungry babies to feed. I was sooooo tired last night and I am so grateful that the mommins' were there to help me with the babies. It's hard being a new mommy and having help at times really makes me feel more confident that I'm going to do the best job at being a mommy! The mommins' say I'm doing great but I just want to make sure that my precious babies are cared for perfectly. It's been a nice quiet day with one of the mommins' taking turns to hanging out with me in my own special whelping room and the other spending time with the rest of the pack so they don't feel to sad about not seeing me.

Mommins Samantha took a cute video of me and the babies earlier so I am going to have Lexie post it since she is good with things like that. Okay I better go tend to my little snuggle bunnies, byeeeeeee xoxox

Hey it's Lexie here, I have posted the video of Izzie and Charlie's puppies at one day old, it is sooooooo cute!

Izzie Gives Birth... Video... (If you're squeamish don't watch)

Hey It's Lexie here, I just wanted to post a video the Mommins' took yesterday of Izzie giving birth to puppy number 5 now known as Sammie. It's so wonderful to see these little babies coming into the world but if you're not into blood and stuff you probably don't want to watch it even though it isn't traumatic at all. By the time Sammie got here the birth canal was already very lubricated and relaxed so as you can see she just pops right out! Izzie is doing great, she's a natural mom and all the babies are happy and healthy!

Anyway I hope you enjoy seeing the wonder of life...

The Puppies Are Here - All Six Of Them!!!

Hello, It's Brodie here, it's been such an exciting time over the last 24 hours! Izzie gave birth to 6 beautiful babies. Four girls and 2 boys! I am so happy that they are all big, beautiful and healthy. I know the Mommins' said that the first 48 hours is crucial for their survival but I am just happy that there entrance into the world was a successful one.

Over to the proud Dad Charlie! Hey Brodie thanks, boy was I anxious, I think I'll sleep for a week after worrying about Izzie and the puppies all day today but hey that's what new dad's do I guess. They were all big babies, they say the usual size for a springer puppy is 9-14 ounces... well let me tell you my kids blew that outta the water! Three of them weighed in at 16 ounces, one at 15.5 ounces and two and 14 ounces! Well judging by the size of Izzie at the end of her pregnancy we are not surprised!

So in order here are the gang...

First was a 16oz boy at 10.50am, Mommins Rachel named him Charger for the San Diego Chargers, she figured the boys should have football names, which is fully agree with plus it seemed fitting since he was first to come charging on out of there!

Second she had a 14oz girl at 11.47am, Mommins Samantha named her Lady since she was the first lady, and a cute little thing too.

Third there was a 14oz girl at 11.59am, I named her Belle after Izzie since Izzie full name is Isabella.

Fourth she had a 15.5oz boy at 12.26pm, Mommins Rachel following the football theme named him Saint after the New Orleans Saints, well they did just win the Superbowl so we went with a winning name!

Fifth was a 16oz girl at 12.51pm, Mommins Rachel for some reason instantly said we should call her Sammie after Mommins Samantha, I don't know her personalilty much yet since she is not even a day old at the momment but I'm thinking Mommins Rachel has some inside information that she is going to be spunky or something, haha!

Finally the Sixth was a 16oz girl at 1.10pm, the last pup was the only one to come out feet first the rest were head first. We all came up with the name Bonnie because her coloring looked a little different and very pretty.

Over to you Izzie
Oh hi, I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for all the kind words you have sent my way, I am exhausted but I'm feeling good. That's all from me today, I've got some puppies to go tend to! Over to you Montie...

Hey Folks, well you are probably wondering about the puppies coloring and marking well I have the info for you...at the moment it's hard to say the final coloring each of them will be. They all initially look to be black and white but when the light shines on a few of them there seems to be the potential to have the rare, double recessive sable color that Charlie has but it doesn't show up until later so we'll just have to wait and see. Also there could be tri-colors that have tan points (like me except with black instead of the liver I have) but that might show up later too. Regardless of the color they end up they are gorgeous and have 100% perfect markings. All of the top show English Springer spaniels have to a full white symmetrical blaze on the face, a white collar and a full color saddle. So white markings on the back or butt are apparently less desirable but I always get voted most handsome in the house so I have no idea where that nonsense comes from! Anyways Izzie and Charlie's babies all have these perfect markings so that's a good thing even though we all agree we are happy as long as they are healthy... they could be tartan for all we care ;0)

Ok time for some sleep, it's been a crazy day!

Still Waiting...

Hey girls & guys, it's me Charlie. Well Izzie Bizzie still hasn't delivered the babies yet and we are all getting so excited, we just want to see them now! Izzie doesn't seem too bothered though, she's just been relaxing and sleeping. I think her big belly full of puppies is making her tired.

Mommins Samantha is excited to see the color of the babies and spent forever researching our pedigrees and genetics stuff trying to guess what's going to pop out! I think we'll just have to wait and see.

Until this week mommins Rachel was doing some work for a friend and stopping by to check in us every few hours but now she is home all the time so she can be there to help Izzie when she starts delivering the pups. That means I have a constant cuddle buddy, I sure love to cuddle with the mommins'. Not only that I get to play outside all day with her
too, yippee!!!

I'll let everyone know when the cute, fuzzy babes arrive, stay tuned it won't be long! Until then all I can do is wait...

Hello Everyone!

Hey, it's Brodie here, I know we have been out of blogging action for a long time but we have been busy doggies. Okay not too busy to update all of you but really we were just lazy. So the mommins have been telling me I have to start again since our fans have missed us so I'm going to do my best to rally the troops and get everyone blogging again, wish me luck, with Charlie to deal with it's gonna be a challenge! Oh here he come, I'll let him take over... byeeeeee

Hey y'all it's Charlie Chops here comin' at ya from Northern California! I've had a pretty standard day today... I woke up, ate some good food, Mmmmm, mmm how I do love food! Then I went back to bed with Mommins Samantha and cuddled with her and I do looooovvvvvvveeeeee to cuddle too! Then we all got up, I played out in the yard, and I do looooovvvvvvveeeeee to play in the yard!

Here's a photo of me and Izzie playing in the yard!

Now I'm all tired out so I'm gonna go take a nap so I'll be talking to y'all later, bye! Over to you B-man.

Thanks Charlie for that update, wow Charlie seems to be getting the hang of this whole blogging thing. Well we are all getting excited about my li'l sister Izzie's puppies coming. She is due on Sunday but the Mommins' seem to think they might show up a little early. Izzie's belly it huge! I know she is going to be such a good mom, she is always mothering the pack, I swear she cleans my eye boggers so well I'm gonna end up with sparkling fur! Being the leader amongst us four legged members of the pack I'm keeping my cool so no one gets anxious but I'll be happier once all the pups are here and everyone is happy and healthy.

Here is a photo of Izzie and Lexie relaxing on the couch.

Okay I'll make sure we keep the blog posted about the pups and I'll go Montie and Lexie they better think of something fun to talk about since it's their turn tomorrow.

This is a photo of Charlie, Izzie, Montie and Me after a trip to Alton Park in Napa, Lexie was still being dried off after we found a huge puddle to go play in!

That's all for now, over and out from the B-man and the rest of the gang.

Business as Usual Today on Daily Dog

Hello and welcome to another edition of daily dog. Montie man here, It's been a while since I blogged so I figured I was say hi. Us pups have had a great couple of weeks since the Mommins' have been ok vacation and spending all their time with us! However today it's back to reality, both Mommins' are back to work and Granny and Grandad leave today :0( We had so much fun though! Mommins Samantha took lots of fun videos of us but hasn't figured out how to post them to the blog yet but she is working on it. In the mean time we were helping her get ready this morning for work as you can see in the picture! Hehe this is Charlie and my idea of helping!

Now it's time for a nap until Mommins Rachel gets home from work to play with us, luckily they never leave us alone for long so I'll just have enough time to fit one in. Byeeee Zzzzzzzzzz

Extended Family Today on Daily Dog

Hey Folks, it's Brodie here.

I thought it might be cool if I shared some pictures of our extended family that we met in Indiana last year. They are a great bunch, here are four of them altogether, Boiler (after Purdue of course!) the Man of their house is the only one not related to either myself or Izzie in some way. Firstly there is Tilley, she is my full sister and litter mate, yep we were born in the same litter in Napanee, Indiana on January 21st 2006! Wow I'm getting old! Anyway she is sweet and looks just like me! Well that's what the Mommins' say.

In the picture below she is the one second from the left sitting. Izzie's Mom Nittany is the black and white girl at the far left. Sami, Izzie and my half sister is the little girl second in from the right and then there is General at the far right of the picture.

Then we met Nittany, she is Izzie's mom and the kindest gentlest mommy I'd ever seen. The mommins' both said that when they we went to pick out Izzie that she allowed everyone to pick up the pups and play with them without getting mad at them for interfering with her litter, now that's a good girl!

This is Nittany with her pups, Izzie is in there somewhere with her siblings! Probably that little butt sticking out under everyone else! Izzie was only about 10 days old here. My how things have changed!

Then Sami joined their family, we didn't actually get to meet her which I am sad about because she looks like a lot of fun. She has the same dad as both Izzie and I. That would be Gunner the man himself, as the Mommins' have said, they must have broke the mold when they made him because his pups are something else!

This is mine and Izzie's dad Gunner in the picture below, now you know where I get the droopy face from!

This is the most recent picture of the gang, Sami to the far left is sure getting to be a big girl and looks a lot like our Izzie Bizze and a bit of me if I do say so myself. In fact Sami is only a couple of months younger than Izzie. Then there is Nittany, Izzie's Mom, to the far right and wow they are identical, just look at that face! My good ole sister Tilley is in there too, second in from the right and of course the man Boiler!

Check out the resemblance between Izzie, Sami and Nittany! I love this photo of Izzie when she was going through her doggie teenage look, it's the gangly phase between pup and adult when you just look funny, she reminds me of myself. She is so cute but don't tell her too often or it will go to her head!

We had a great time when we visited the gang and the Mommins' took some photos, here we all are pre Izzie and Sami, having a great time sniffing!

Yes Brodie we did have a great time with you and Izzie's extended family. Hi it's Lexie here and since Brodie was posting some pictures of his family I wanted to put some up of my own.

This is my dad, Earl and two of my siblings, the black one is my brother and the liver one my sister, I had more but their forever families had already come to pick them up. Mommin's Rachel always tells me how much I'm like my dad because I love to fetch like CRAZY! As you can see so does my dad!

My mom, Sadie was such a kind and gentle mommy, she is black and white and tiny in size according to the Mommins'. She must have given me the super cuddly side to my personality.

Whereas my Dad, Earl is liver and white and quite a big boy, he sure enough passed on the superstar athletic gene along with some craziness, I'll admit it, hehe!

Now what about me Charlie Chops... Oh I'm all the way from New Mexico! My Grandparents on my dad's side live in Arizona and are pretty fancy but not as fancy as my mom's side of the family, apparently they are all Champions whatever that means.
My dad, his name is Luke.

My mom, her name is Lizzie with me and my brothers and sisters.

My dad used to like to remind me he was from champion bloodlines too but I really have no idea what they were all talking about. My Mommins' told me they didn't plan on getting any more pups at the time but Mommins Samantha liked to look at puppyfind.com just to see what was out there. One day she saw one of my brothers and he looked just like Brodie but with my coloring and they fell in love. This is my brother that the Mommins' think looks like Brodie.

They talked it over and decided to enquire about him. They were sad them they were told he was already sold but I was still available. Now at this point I'm beginning to sound like an after thought right? Don't worry the story gets better! So they looked at my pictures and fell even more in love, yeahy! Me and my brothers getting into mischief, I'm the one of the far right

The Mommins' tell me all the time they are so glad that my brother was taken otherwise they would have never known me and their lives would be missing something. Yeah, they would be missing me, and let's face it without me who would rearrange their shoes and hide their socks, I mean seriously! I just don't know what they would do with me. So the Mommins' drove 6 hours and my parents owners drove something crazy like 14 hours with me and we met up. It's all kinda fuzzy to me but I'm told I was cute, little and sleepy from my travels. I became best friends with Izzie right away cos we both like to play and Montie too. I really look up to Brodie and I hope one day to be as good a boy as he is... but don't tell him that! Not forgetting my girl Lexie we have the most fun playing with the ball... at least I do when I steal it from her! So all in all a happy tale I would say and I am happily the Prince of the backyard! Check out how cute I was, how could they possibly resist me!

Hey hang on what about me, Montie? Ha gotcha, I was kind of a rushed pick up you could say and so the Mommins didn't have time to take any pictures of my parents but they did get to meet them. As I remember it I was starving and sad. The mean breeder came and grabbed me out of my dark kennel and took me into the house, I was terrified. I was cowering around and saw two new faces, they looked different to the usual faces and now I know why, they were smiling at me instead of frowning. I had only known a mean frown directed towards me up until then. I was coaxed with treats which I readily took since I was starving. Even though I wasn't selling myself too well, Mommin's Samantha scooped me up into her arms, I was only a baby after all.

Then she took me out and into their car. I was so scared but also a little excited and hopeful that this could be a new beginning. I never in my wildest dreams thought it would be what it has turned out to be! I am now a California boy, taking trips here, there and everywhere even road trippin' across the country with my trusty pack. I get to go hiking in Napa and see the mountains and beautiful vineyards even though all I care about is getting as dirty as possible, hehe. I have two amazing Mommins' and the best Brother and sisters in the world. I have an unlimited cuddle supply and a house with back yard to call my own. So you see folks I don't need any pictures nor do I want them to remind me of the bad times, all I care about is my pack and the good times we've had and will have to come!

Me and the B-Man napping

That's all from us Today on Daily Dog, hope to see you again soon!
